Zambians have voted. The polls have closed. Counting began.
14 August 2026
The Electoral Commission of Zambia suspended the counting and announcement of
election results nationwide, citing incidents of violence and the theft of
marked ballot papers in some areas.
We condemn all violence against election officials. Those responsible must be investigated and held accountable.
But the votes of millions of Zambians cannot be left in limbo.
We, the undersigned, call for
- The immediate and transparent resumption of counting wherever security permits.
- The protection and preservation of all ballots, GEN 20 forms and election records.
- Full access for accredited local and international observers and party agents.
- Regular public updates from the ECZ, constituency by constituency.
- An independent investigation into violence, ballot theft or interference, with accountability regardless of political affiliation.
This is not about one political party.
It is about every Zambian who stood in line and cast a vote believing that their voice would be heard. Zambia has a proud democratic tradition. That tradition must be protected.
